A sew in hair extension is done by using wefts of hair. A weft is extension hair sewn together to be held in place. Wefts can range from 2”-3” long to 12” long in width. The shorter widths are used for application to the sides of the head, and the longer widths go all the way around the back of the head in an almost horseshoe formation.

How are sew-in extensions applied?

On-scalp braids are first placed on the head using the person’s natural hair. On-scalp braids are also referred to as dutch braids or corn rolls. Once these braids are put onto the scalp, a hair needle and thread are used to sew the weft’s binding strand into the natural hair/on-scalp braids row by row.

How are these extensions removed?

As the natural hair grows, the braids are loosened and the weft is still attached by thread. The threading is cut out with scissors and then the wefts can be removed.

How long do these type of extensions last?

Depending on your hair type and texture will depend on the length of time your placement lasts. Finer to normal textures will more likely only last up to two weeks. For thicker more coarse textures you can sometimes get up to four weeks of placement. Once this time has expired, you will need to go back in to have the wefts removed, the hair re-braided and the wefts placed back in the hair. These wefts can be reusable. It would be presumable that if you are getting them replaced every 2-4 weeks you would be able to get a couple uses out of the same wefts. However, keep in mind the quality of hair depends on the lifetime of the hair. Ultimately, it is up to the client’s preference.

Are there any warnings about this type of hair extension I should be aware of?

In our professional opinion, finer hair types should not be using this type of extension. We believe in customizing the weight and size of the hair extension to match the client’s natural hair. Finer hair types usually aren’t strong enough to hold the weight of weft that cannot be customized in size or weight. Finer hair types also have a harder time holding an on-scalp braid in place for longer time periods resulting in more frequent maintenance visits. Then adding the weight of a weft onto those braids not only pulls on the braid to loosen it quicker, but can pull the natural hair out by the root. Keep in mind the braids are also put in as tight to the scalp as possible, which also creates a lot of pulling on the hair at the root.To the touch of the hair, you can also feel the protrusion of the weft on the braid if you were to pat or touch the hair where the extension is.Ergun Tercan European Salon does not service nor apply these type of hair extensions at all.To learn more about the hair extension services we offer click here or call and set up your consultation today at 303-433-5544.
