What is a glue-in hair extension?
A glue-in hair extension is a weft of hair glued onto the scalp to be held in place. Wefts can range from 2”-3” long to 12” long in width. The shorter widths are used for application to the sides of the head, and the longer widths go all the way around the back of the head in an almost horseshoe formation.
How are wefts glued onto the scalp?
The natural hair is basically parted and a special glue is used to glue the weft onto the part line of the scalp. Sometimes the natural hair is placed in an on scalp braid and the weft is glued onto the part line above the braid as well.
How are these extensions removed?
A dissolving solution is placed at the scalp where the weft is placed. Then the weft is slowly peeled off the scalp one whole strip [of a weft] at a time.
How long do these type of extensions last?
Depending on your hair type and texture will depend on the length of time your placement lasts. The finer to normal textures have up to about two weeks before needing maintenance. For thicker, more coarse textures you can sometimes get up to four weeks of placement. Once this time has expired, you will need maintenance; which is to have the wefts removed, the hair re-braided and the wefts placed back in the hair. These wefts can be reusable, it’s up to the client’s preference. It would be presumable that if you are getting them replaced every 2-4 weeks you would be able to get a couple uses out of the same wefts. As previously mentioned, keep in mind the quality of hair depends on the lifetime of the hair.
Are there any warnings about this type of hair extension I should be aware of?
In our professional opinion, the on-scalp glue can be damaging to one’s natural hair. Depending on how wide of a gap in your part line is available to glue the weft onto, determines how much of that glue is attaching to your natural hair. Most natural part lines are very narrow, as they should be. Therefore, most the time, when you part out natural hair, the part line is not as wide as the weft being glued to it. Overtime of glueing wefts onto the scalp can result in wider part lines, most of the time due to natural hair being pulled when removing the wefts and new natural hair not growing back. You should also keep in mind that there are existing follicles at the part line that you are suffocating when adding a glued weft directly to the scalp. We believe that every client is unique, and the best way to service anyone for hair extensions is to go through a consultation.
