Clip-In Hair Extensions
You may already be familiar with clip-in hair extensions. Here is a bit more information on them that maybe you didn’t know before.
What is a Clip-in hair extension?
A clip-in hair extension is multiple wefts of hair with tiny clips at each end, and in the middle on some of the longer pieces. If you have skipped directly to this part of the blog, and are wondering what a “weft” is; feel free to review the portion of the blog describing “sew-in” or “glue-in” extensions where that is described.
How are Clip-in hair extensions applied?
The natural hair is basically parted horizontally across the scalp in different sections; and then the clips to the wefts are clipped onto the natural hair. They basically just clip right in.
How are these extensions removed?
To remove these type of hair extensions you would just unclip the tiny clips attached to the wefts that you clipped onto your natural hair. Just as you clipped them in, you would unclip them right out.
How long do these type of extensions last?
In our professional opinion, we only recommend clip-in hair extensions after doing a consultation and making sure your natural hair is strong enough to withhold this type of hair extension. We will speak on the reason for this after the next question below. Once we deem your hair safe for clip in hair extensions, we would only recommend them for a special event or a short period of time. Examples of this would be for a wedding, or a weekend vacation. Clip-in extensions are ideal for a day, and then removing them before going to sleep that evening. We wouldn’t recommend going over three consecutive days even if you are taking them out at night, because of the weight of the hair extensions clipped onto your natural hair over long periods of time. We go into more detail about this below.
Are there any warnings about this type of hair extension I should be aware of?
In our professional opinion, depending on your hair type and texture will depend on if we would even recommend this type of hair extension for you. Finer hair types, or any hair that is less thick or dense than the hair on the clip-in wefts should not use this type of hair extension. Our reason for recommending that is that if you can imagine twenty pieces of your hair growing out of your scalp; then clipping to those twenty pieces, 1,000-1,500 pieces of more hair; the law of gravity and the added weight of the extra hair will eventually pull out the twenty strands of real hair by the root from the scalp. That then creates a possible bald spot where the hair was pulled out by the root (if it doesn’t regrow again). For this same reason, we do not recommend wearing these clip-in hair extensions for longer than an event or a few days at a time maximum. The main pieces of clip in hair extensions that provide most of the coverage are the longest pieces of wefts, width wise (not length of hair). These larger/main pieces often times have about four clips on them for attaching to your real hair which means there remains gaps in the wefts from clip to clip, only allowing the natural hair to hold all the weight of the extension in just those four areas. Over long periods of time sores can develop where the wefts are placed. Or hair being pulled out where the clips are placed due to the natural hair not matching the texture of the wefts as we explained previously. In very rare cases we have heard of bald spots also appearing where the clips were touching the scalp due to an allergic reaction to the type of metal the clips are made from. This is not very common at all, but worth mentioning if you are someone who is already aware of any allergies to certain metals. To get help deciding what type of extension would be best for you, feel free to call Ergun Tercan European Salon today at 303-433-5544 to talk to your certified hair extension specialist today.
